Campus Pride continues HBCU Sports Inclusion Summit series with second event on Thursday, October 20

Campus Pride continues its HBCU Sports Inclusion Summit series with its second event on Thursday, October 20 at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL.   The event will feature a keynote by Out Gay Athlete and former NFL Football Player Wade Davis.  Davis will talk about the important role of athletics on campus in creating a culture of respect and civility.  Resources will be shared from Campus Pride to better improve athletic spaces and create inclusive policies, programs and practices in sports.

“Campus Pride is committed to helping provide additional support and the necessary resources for HBCUs like Alabama A&M University. Often HBCUs are overlooked, especially in athletics, when it comes to work for LGBTQ inclusion.  The summit offers a deeper level of support from the community,” said Shane Windmeyer, Executive Director of Campus Pride. “Alabama A&M University was selected for their past efforts and work with Campus Pride. This summit is a way to highlight the positive progress and continue the journey.”

This is the second event of three HBCU Sports Inclusion Summits planned for this Fall 2016. The first event was hosted in September at Virginia State University and the third will be hosted at North Carolina Central University in November.  All three summits are meant to focus on HBCUs in the South and ways to better equip these campuses with LGBTQ resources.  Wade Davis from the You Can Play Project is the featured speaker for this years summit series.  Funding support for the summits came in part from the LGBT Sports Foundation and the NCAA Office of Inclusion.

“Our primary goal with these Summit events is to invest in sports inclusion at HBCUs and to help foster a more welcoming, affirming space for LGBTQ individuals on campus,” said Windmeyer. “We chose HBCUs that have taken positive action, so others can do the same.”
